Finally the weather has changed and today started wet an grey but what a difference it made to the river, flies of all varieties coming off the water and plenty of fish rising to them, a fly fishers dream. However the dream soon turned to a bit of a nightmare as I spent over three hours targeting the same big fish rising freely in a difficult part of the river, I gave that fish my best shot but in the end had to admit defeat and move on.
The rest of the day was very pleasant indeed taking 9 fish between us, one of which was a very nice fish indeed.
The day ended much as it started when I decided to target another good fish taking yellow May Duns off the surface, this time I had three chances but somehow missed them all! Again I had to admit defeat and head to the chip shop...I wonder if golf would be easier?
A lovely day with most fish falling to dries, thank you WUF.

After a period of bright sunshine and warm days I was woken by a torrential rainstorm at about 4.30am. By the time I’d reached the beat the rain had stopped, there was a bit of light drizzle, and it was noticeably cooler. The water level was pretty low, but after the previous night’s rain there was a good flow to it. It felt like it had been flushed through.
Most fish caught on Klinkhammer/nymph set up, but a couple on the dry later in the day. All fish healthy, but smallish, 8-10”, including one OOS Grayling, and a Rainbow (presumably from the old fish farm), the rest were WBT. I missed plenty too. There were a couple of big trees down across the beat, which made fishing those sections impossible.
Another great day on a WUF beat.

Arrived at about midday on a hot sunny day. My first visit to this beat. River in good condition but very little sign of surface activity. Many midges in evidence and quite a few mayfly so opted for a size 10 Wulff. This yielded a 7" Brownie but all went quiet in the afternoon and I had no success on the Wulff or a Klinkhammer. What a beautiful beat in every sense.

Beat:River Taff
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Quote from a person fishing the Taff:Had two good days on the Taff this weekend, about 20 Fish up to 2lb. Lots of fish lost and lots of flies. Even though the waters so low the fish fought so hard, had a job keeping them out of snags. Never get bored of that river. Quote:Class day out on the taff today, biggest brown trout I’ve caught on the river, on fly, photo doesn’t do it justice. Caught 3 in total, biggest on dry fly, other 2 on nymphs.

Cold, misty start 11' rising to 21' when mist cleared. We found scores of small spent flies in the slack water, some Gnats some Olives. These are difficult to represent artificially and the trout were unimpressed with most offerings. Most fish were 0.5lbs to 0.75lbs, except for a 1.5lb trout from the rapids on a bead-head nymph, and at 6pm a trout of 2.5lbs on a small dry March Brown from the tail of Chain Pool.

6 x trout 6-10 inches, Monnow Gosling. Rather a slow start today - still not so many natural rises - but they do seem to be switching on to a big fly. Nearly trod on a huge eel.
