Last week's floods and frost had gone and conditions seemed right for a couple of end of year barbel. However, they had other ideas and a short session produced only three (good) chub. Nice to be back on the river, though with very slippery banks I thought once or twice I might be in it!

5 x grayling 6-18 inches, Tungsten Hare's Ear and Pink Shrimp fished on a French leader outfit. To be more accurate, 4 shots from 6-9 inches, lots of grayling parr, plus one beast of a cock grayling at 18 inches which put up a most determined resistance for a time. I thought I had hooked into a log for a couple of seconds. To Be fair, RW of Portishead (report 3rd November) showed the way. Plenty of cold, clear water coming down. I think there are reasons to be cheerful about the recovery of this stream.

DC & GC made a late decision to fish today, the river was running fast and up a few inches from summer level with a greenish tinge, a nice mild overcast day with little wind saw us both opting for duo nymph method. It wasn't easy but rewarding when we finally contacted a few fish.

One thing to think about is the footbridge is getting a bit tired with the wooden slats showing signs of age.
Thanks to W&U and the fishery owner.

Fished from 10- 3. River at .58 on the Cilmery scale and running strongly, just a little too deep to get to some of the best places. Fish between 11-14 inches. First 5 to a # 16 goldbead hares ear, the next 8 to a selection of # 16 dries, a Klinkhammer Adams pattern being the most successful.

Very hard going today 3 small grayling to nymphs. Lost a few slipping the hook before I could bring them to hand. A small hatch of dark olives appeared around mid day. Saw a couple of small grayling rise so switched to dry fly for and hour but no response. In hindsight I could have done with a few more heavier nymphs as they only seemed interested in taking nymphs bouncing bottom.
