First time on this beat, and only second time on the Wye. Fished the wrong area (fast, shallow water) for most of the day but still managed a nice barbel of 8lb 5oz which held in the strong current for at least 10 minutes despite using a powerful barbel rod.
I had an eel at dusk which considering their declining population was not unwelcome.
Lovely day out saw kingfishers, buzzards, wagtails and woodpeckers all in very peaceful location. Some swims tricky to get to but this is the Wye not a commercial.

The river had risen significantly overnight and was racing through. Locating fish proved to be difficult. I fished a number of swims using feeder tactics with various hook baits with no success. Tried a rolling bait but just found snags. Switched to trotting down the inside edge below the bottom croy and finally found some fish. Only small chub and dace but non the less most welcome. My brother stuck it out in the bottom swim for the afternoon and was rewarded as darkness fell with a Barbel just over 5lb. Thank you to the WUF for another lovely day on the Wye.

Nothing caught although had had a good pull in the bottom pool. I am amazed at this beat's poor returns- single figures for the whole season! There are two obvious areas for salmon. At the hut around the groins and below the footbridge looks great. I can only assume that the poor results reflect a lack of angling effort. The suggestion that coarse anglers pay £45 a day is unreasonable as no effort has been made to create swims along the bank. The paths accessing the groins could do with a little work also.

Beat:Lyepole

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

River still low and clear, the recent rainfall has not affected the level yet. Fishing was slow to start with but gradually picked up with grayling rising to the emerged fly on the surface. A couple took nymphs but today was a day for the dry fly and good sport too even if the fish were all small.

2 Trout, 9 Grayling
