After 2 fabulous days on Backney surely things could not get better could it. Oh yes! Middle Hill Court is a truely stunning scenic beat . Admittly short on pegs but catch it on a high river and your in for a treat. Slow start but arm aching action was soon to follow with a number of high nines and the second doulbe of my Wye trip in a 10lb 7oz stunning fish. Roll on tomorrow!

Fishing:Trout (River)

Thought I'd send in a return for today on the Gwent AS waters at Gilwern, as it was a bit more promising c.f. Usk trout fishing of late. Maybe early autumn's trout fishing is just around the corner? Picked today as it was cloudy, almost wind-free and a muggy, warm 19 degrees (water a fish-friendly 15 degrees and a nice tea colour after the rain of the recent week) with levels dropping to 9-10" on the Glanusk gauge. Fished from 11a.m. until 4.30 p.m. Not long after arrival there were just a few rises from different fish, so at least some fish were looking up. During the course of the day a few small olives and PWs were around, and just one or two large green and Turkey duns. Sedges also in the afternoon. Rises were either slashing or bulging, suggesting that fish were chasing rising nymphs. Suspected that they might be after the rather more prolific olives / PWs and so fished a size 16 pale hare's fur Duck's Dun, which works well at this time of year and which was gratefully received all day until about 3.15 when rises slowed up. Most fish taken were risers but a good few just came up for the fly as well. Fish ranged from 10, 12, 14 and 15 inches, the latter of which were lovely 1.5 pounders. All fish were very fit and now showing their late-summer colours. Saw two salmon as well. Happy days!
