Conditions seemed fine, there was a rising river and it was reasonably warm. However, I managed to blank which I confess is not at all rare. I chose to concentrate solely on barbel as I felt sure they would feed, but my offer of swimfed fishy flavoured boilies, and pelllets managed to attract zero interest in the five hours I fished. My friend on the other side of the river, as ever, managed to catch a few by varying his tactics. I gather the chub was quite nice as were the two grayling he took on the float. His barbel was only a small one I gather, around the pound mark. Lots of beautiful views rainbows, kingfishers, kestrels hunting, buzzards soaring etc. I had a nice time, but it would have been better if I'd managed to fluke a fish or two....

After a wash off the wye due to flood water, I fished here in the afternoon, only one grayling caught the size of my finger, but still a pleasant afternoon.

The river was low & clear and the sun was shining brightly between the showers. Not textbook Barbel conditions. Surprisingly they fed throughout the day though. Tactics were the usual groundbait feeder and pellet hookbait combination. The Barbel ranged from 4lbs to 8lb 10ozs. A cracking day's fishing which was just what we needed after struggling at Backney Upper a week ago!

We walked the beat prior to fishing, not many accessible pegs towards the lower limit end of the beat. From the car park down to the right offered a few more fishable pegs and we started off in two of these in what looked deeper water. The weather had started off quite bright but we were soon experiencing one of several heavy showers during the day which soon turned the access down to our pegs from comfortable to treacherous. Not a bite was registered in the first part of the day so JA decided to move swims to one right at the end of the beat (by the sign). Approaching mid afternoon and after trying many types and combinations of bait a 2lb 4oz brown trout took a liking to my ledgered treble maggot. About 30 minutes later JA tempted a barbel just shy of 8lb on pellet after missing a bite earlier and this was our catch for the day.
