Struggled today, a contrast from my last visit three weeks ago. For some reason the colder unsettled weather seemed to put the grayling off the feed though I tried my usual range of tactics. Oh well, better next luck next time.

Very tough conditions with low clear water level and weed wiping out the rod/rig all day long. Fished from first light and stuck at it and as the many bats came out at dusk (some bumping into my line to give false bites), just as I was going to pack up my perseverance paid off and I had my first barbel at 6lb. Had a few beers to celebrate :-)

Fished from 10 a.m. and finished early, quite chilled at about 4.30 p.m. Water 1'2" on the Llanstephan guage and quite nippy at eight degrees. Fairly calm and cloudy for most of the day but a bit of a cold upstream wind, mid-afternoon. Definitely now time for the LJs and also for another top layer next time out - winter cometh! Pale wateries and a few olives appeared early afternoon which induced fish to rise. Whilst fly was still around when I left, the fish pretty much stopped rising at about 3.30 p.m. Had about a third of the fish on nymphs (FBPTN, pink shrimp and Duracell) and the rest on a small light hare's ear Duck's Dun which, as over the last few weeks up north, seems to have induced fish rising to PWs and olives to take up top. Best OOS trout 14" and the rest 10-12", and most grayling 10-12" with a couple of 13-14" fish as well. Must stay warmer next time out!

Due to a problem at work me fishing mate was called in. I found the river very low and clear as expected. The first frost of the year didn't help along with a bright day. Fished most of the stretch not a bite. That said a very enjoyable day out.
