The Wye and Usk Foundation was a perfect resource for us to find as novice fly fishers.
The wind and temperatures meant that very few trout were rising, but to have such a beautiful stretch of the Usk to ourselves on a generally sunny day was a privilege.
We will be back!

Nothing caught nothing seen. This section looks perfect and should be teeming with life but it seems to be baron.

A very cold, but wonderful day on a very beautiful stretch of river. Two nice trout up to 1lb 8oz taken on size 18 tungsten bead. There was a stuttering Large Dark Olive hatch suppressed by the cold. Water temperature of 9 degrees so just warm enough for the trout to be willing to take nymphs. We also came across 50 or so dead toads which had had their legs torn off by otters! This is common otter behavior as they discard the poisonous bodies of the toads - an entirely natural, but entirely gruesome sight! River looking spectacularly beautiful with kingfisher zipping past.

First time on this beat nothing rising and very limited fly life on the water so decided from the off to fish 2.5mm gold tungsten baetis nymph on size 16 jig hook. started at 10.30 and by 11.30 had brought 8 to the net, then I walked into to a deep pool and over my waders it went and flooded my top, underneath which was housing my smokes! heavy bummer so off to shop for another pack. Was back in the water for 12.30 and what activity there was had totally ceased, it was about 1.30 when they took up the heads of pools again and managed another eight in this hour then again it switched off so decided to call it a day..size wise between 7-13 inches and was smashed by a decent fish in one of the deeper pools. Several also hooked and lost due to overhanging branches and losing tension on fly line. I fished with my seven foot cane rod and this was easily a foot to long

Came down to the river just after lunch and there were a few fish rising, but none taking my klinkhammers. As the afternoon wore on, the rises petered out. Otherwise a beautiful beat.
PS I could not find the catch return book at the camp site?

Sunny cold and just the help from the ripple on the low water, visitor Mr James Martindale took a well deserved 12lb fish from Loxters pool. The second from the right hand bank on the fly this week. Only surprise is that there was so little angling effort other than from the brief visit of one other on such a superb spring day. I tried until lunch time saw fish on beat 3 but no takers for me. The otter however dined well on beat 3 as catch and release was not his mantra. The gulls would not leave the carcass. Good to see there is no waste.Bring on more rain.

First time fishing this beat and very impressed - a lot of water to go at with some lovely fly stretches, Terry was very helpful and ghillied me into the fish - a cock salmon 82 cm x 37cm which took a Scandi Sunray on sink 2/3, gave a good account of itself and swam away strongly. Friendly helpful fellow fishermen completed a very pleasant day on the Wye in the spring, helped along with some cider from the farm shop!
