Mixed hatch of March Browns and Large Dark Olives.
Could not get a take on Dry fly. Fishing a team of North Country Spiders caught 6 up to 11 inches. Great guiding from Oliver Burch. Old Vicarage B&B at Erwood was good
The whole experience was enjoyable.

Arrived with the river just under .7 on the gauge, quite cold with a brisk downstream wind. Decided to start fishing with salmon rod, got in the water at the bridge and slowly covered the pools working my way upstream, being a novice with the doublehander it was great to be in the water and for the first time feel that (after a shaky start) I am starting to cast fairly consistently! Had a pull at the top of wood stream that turned out to be a lively trout of around half a pound that was quickly unhooked and released. Fished upto the upper rocks and noticed that there was a big hatch of March Browns, nothing at first seemed to be rising but after around fifteen minutes of a fairly intensive hatch the river seemed to come alive with plops and small splashes, by the time I had switched rods things had slowly subsided? Just caught the end of the hatch, I managed to miss a couple of takes off the surface and my companion connected with two fish that unfortunately didn't make the net, after this period of excitement the river went back to its normal self and stayed that way for the rest of the day.
Tried for a salmon below the bridge late in the day but unfortunately not enough flow for the fly? Turned out to be a beautiful spring day and am already looking forward to my next visit, it's becoming an obsession??

A short session late morning to mid afternoon. River looked good, but little to no evidence of fly life. Prospected with dry fly. First fish came from a likely lie. The second was a cast to one of only two rises spotted all day. A bit quiet but enjoyable none the less. A few areas have been noticeably modified by the winter floods in terms of depth and missing trees.

A lovely but tricky river to fish. Water very clear so fish were easily spooked. Saying that there weren't many fish around to spook, but fishing likely pools worked and landed 2 fish of a pound each. For the size of river it was nice catching fish of that size, both returned.

It probably was a decent day if it wasn't for a chilly steady northerly wind. We had 1 trout on nymph at the beginning of the beat then there was a hatch of olives at midday for about 1 hour which gave us few fishes of around a pound. After that the fishes stopped feeding. Despite covering lots of water we didn't have a single take on nymphs. I still need to decipher this river under the surface.

Beautiful location but where are the fish! My father, brother and I fished Penpont for two days beginning on April 23rd with only one trout caught between us all. We had a small hatch on April 23rd that lasted an hour or so and pricked the mouths of a couple of trout but brought nothing to the net. The next day between us we probably saw all of two rises on the river. My brother ultimately managed to bring a 3/4 lb brown to the net rigged up NZ style with the Klink and Dink just above the bridge. We fish a LOT and this is probably some of the toughest we've ever done.
