A great day on the river with the Barbel in great form. The fish were caught on boilies and pellet and ranged in size from 9 lb to 5 lb. All fish were in good condition. The lower swims can be prone to snags with a fair bit of tackle lost. With this being the second day of the season most swims had been cleared but, a few still needed to be cleared so it would have been useful to take a machete early in the season. An otter and a mink were spotted on the beat.

River was in superb condition, fished the Boys Rocks pool, not easy to fish and almost impossible to use feeders, having lost a number we used pencil leads with much more success. The 3 fish caught were in superb condition, we estimated the weight as between 8 and 10lbs, all three being of similar size, we also lost 4 good fish due to line chaffing on the rocks. All fish were caught on 15mm Red Robin pellets.
As a footnote I have to say that having fished the Wye for over 30 years I have never seen as many salmon in the river, a large number of grilse, but also larger fish, all looked to be fresh run fish.

What a difference to day one. Arrived on site and met one of the syndicate Salmon anglers who was very helpful. The telephone call to Terry had also been productive. With a little walking lots of great looking swims. The banks are steep which limits swims for those of us with mobility problems. But sat in a swim and started catching within minutes. Barbel to 8.13 and chub to 4 .10. We left happy when the wind started to create white horse waves after about 5 hours.

Arrived at dawn to find the river very low but having good flow. I started in the middle of beat and had lots of attention from chub but no barbel. They were all good fish with the biggest at 4lb 13oz. I was also surprised by a large eel of 3lb plus. I decided a move was in order due to excess loss of terminal tackle and lack of barbel but upstream section was not looking good as now hot and bright. There are also few accessible swims unless you have a very long landing net handle.
In the afternoon I had a look at lower end of the beat as I had only fished here once before. I ended up fishing at bottom of iron steps but didn't hold out a lot of hope. There were several anglers on the opposite bank most in the process of packing up, presumably due to conditions. So after losing yet a couple more feeders imagine my surprise when hooking up a cracking barbel, weighing in at 8lb 6oz. I would have liked to have stayed for the evening but too tired.
