Beat:Lower Longtown
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
We fished Lower Longtown and Olchon as we could use a single parking place, sharing a ticket. The rivers were very low indeed but at least the weather had warmed up. A steady trickle of Mays but the fish were sadly fairly uninterested. A solitary fish was focussed on Mays and he succumbed to our offering. Otherwise only one or two rises all day although we did bring a few more to surface dries. Nymphs fished duo however did better. The Monnow beat gave 5 to the net and as many on and offs. The Olchon gave 2 to the net...but the fish were cannier and had we landed all that we hooked we would have more than matched the morning. All the fish were of similar size, 6 to 9 inches. The Olchon is fairly demanding with barbed wire to cross and a few large trees to negotiate.

This time I came prepared with a new 7 Foot #3 brook rod which was perfect for this beat and threw a #2 line with a furled leader just fine in the shelter of the stream banks. First go at this beat which has both upland type pools and more sedate pasture land sections. There was a steady hatch of Dancia but not much else from 1pm until 4pm which got the odd fish rising. Most fish took a size 14 para adams and were all in great condition with very fat, full of Mayfly bellies. The best fish was just over 13".

Once again very few fish looking up despite consistent hatches throughout the day. The nymph accounted for the majority. One lovely 2lb fish to a moth at dusk was the exception.

At last - decent weather on a Thursday! And it fell on the day we booked one of our favourite beats too...The river looked in superb condition - clean and flowing well. Not much of a hatch but we could still get the fish looking up to our dries - 22 caught in total, trout and grayling too both to 15" and also 6 greedy salmon parr. The fish are all in super condition - fat and fighting well, especially the grayling in fast water. Someone should tell them to leave our flies alone till next week! All returned fit and healthy, hope to meet them all again when they have grown some more. Very pleasant chat with Mrs M-S out walking the dogs too. Many thanks for making this super fishing available.

Lovely stretch of challenging water ideal for stalking the wild Brownies. Stealth and casting skill being the order of the day, sight fishing and sending your fly over the trout provided some patient sport but this was rewarded with 16 fine brownies ranging from 6" to 10" . Last fish of the day took to 1.5hrs of casting and recasting but it did eventually fall to my 20th fly type!!! Great day out with plenty of hatches, 90% of the fish caught on Grey Wulf the others falling to CDC type sedge in the late evening sunshine.

My father was fishing with a fly not sure what type - saw quite a few fish but caught none as he slipped on the river bank and hurt himself so fishing had to be abandoned.
