Only sporadic small hatches of LDOs between 11 and 2.30 meant quite a few tackle changes but when the trout were rising they really hit hard. 1 on a GRHE early on followed by 4 decent fish, lean but fit, on Kite's Imperial who accounted for themselves well before being returned. The best at 40cm just didn't give up on the acrobatics. A lovely beat although I didn't get past the first two flats. A big otter roamed along the far bank at one point. I'm glad I brought my wading staff, the notes are spot on about the challenging rocky bottom. Plenty of parking on the road going up the hill.

5 Trout

River in good nick. clear and steady at 0.80m. Arrived with a cold northerly wind. Sun came out at 1p.m.and a good hatch of olives ensued. Surprisingly trout were uninterested and no risers. Had one smash take on a wet olive but fine leader parted. No sign of salmon either but a fabulous Spring day with Buzzards and a Red Kite in attendance.

First ever Salmon - caught on a flying C. Fresh Springer - 20lbs - river conditions perfect. Big thanks to Seth and Terry for advice. A lifetimes ambition realised!

1 Salmon

Not good, nothing caught.

Dry day with wind increasing late morning.
No success with worm bait but manage to catch 2 rainbow with spinner during early afternoon.

2 Trout

3 rainbows about 1 1/2lb caught spinning deep. Tried drowning worms, float and ledger most of the day to no avail.
Weather -2c, early in the day, mid day temp rose, glorious afternoon.

Booked day before as Wyesham still too high. First time on this beat so just concentrated on the parts indicated by Terry. Water up here clear, so fly fished most of lower beat 6 and island down on 2 with a little long distance spinning on the parts I could not reach. Nothing showed, only game about were pheasants.

4 x trout 10-12 inches, 12 x out of season grayling 6-14 inches. Cold (plenty of snow still on Black Mountains), sunny and high water. Hatches more or less mirrored those on the Usk this week, large dark olives from about 12.30, followed by a sparse hatch of march browns, all done by 3 o'clock. Followed the hatches with Waterhen Bloa, then dry with Bastard Adams and finally a Deer Hair Emerger. The only problem was that it was the out of season grayling, still dominating the pools, rather than the trout, which were putting their heads up.

4 Trout

Single hook black F C. This fish was just over 30" in length, a siver hen estimated at 12lbs. As it was hooked in same spot as yesterdays 19 1/2 lb cock fish, I believe they travelled together. (Boat Pool at TC)

1 Salmon

Nice sunny day for the first outing, but with a cold breeze. Good flow in the clear river, also a steady hatch of ldo's from about 12 to 3.00pm, although no sign of any rising trout. Tempted 3 all on GRHE nymph, 2 at 10" and 1 at 12" - lean but fit. Pleased with this from what can be a tough stream at times.
