Area:Usk
Beat:Ashford House
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Very warm day, with zero cloud cover so the fish were easily spooked. Limited fly activity until late in the day when the fish started to respond to sporadic hatches. Hard work, but we were rewarded with some beautiful trout to 14 inches - all returned safely.

My first time on this beat and just as I thought, being close to town there was many dog walkers, kids swimming in the river and people everywhere.

Caught on nymph. No hatches and very little fish rises or movement seen. Overcast, the promised sun not showing until we left the river. Long beat with very good stretches to fish.

Area:Upper Wye
Beat:Llanstephan
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:1
Fished the morning on the lower beat to no avail, with extra from SMS at Gromain, thank you. Then finished as planned on the upper beat of Llanstephan. Just as I had started to think maybe next time, my line tightened into a fresh 14lb cock fish, which was released safely. I set about finishing Orchard Pool off to the tail and within 2 casts a 12lb hen took me up and down the pool stripping 30 yards of backing off the reel & burning my fingers to boot! That was landed & released safely too. I finished the pool with a fumbled pluck from another at the tail. All fish on 11ft 7-8 wt switch rod, full floating line and own tied cascade.
These days are few & far between on any river in the UK, but having one on the Wye is very rewarding, well done WUF!

Arrived at 11am with the river low and gin clear and the only small fish seen rising. It was hard going and could have do with more water to fish better. Small dry flies worked. A very nice part of Wales.

Beat:Lugg Litton
Fishing:Trout (River)

Overcast and fairly mild afternoon with the river running clear and at an average height. 10 trout up to about 10 inches caught on dry flies with the majority taking a sedge pattern. A small number of mayfly hatching through the afternoon with a few fish rising for them. Access quite difficult in a few parts due to barbed wire fences.

Beat:Penpont
Fishing:Trout (River)

Booked for a day at Skenfrith but the water visibility was less than 2"- rained off.
Quick call to booking office and I was on my way to Penpont to try my luck on the upper Usk. I must congratulate the WUF on their service and the person who helped me on the phone.
The upper Usk was up and coloured and made wading very tricky - but the water cleared late on and was dropping. The trout were on holiday but I managed 4 babies and one juvenile. Very little fly on the water and little fish activity. Stayed until 9 pm but there was no evening rise or much increased fly life.
Driving home over the Brecon Beacon mountains was worth the trip in itself - clear sky with a full moon on the ascent on my left and the remains of a superb sunset on my right with the Carmarthenshire vans silhouetted in the creeping gloaming.

I couldn't do this beat justice as I hadn't realised how steep the valley was and how much walking was involved. My fault due to a medical condition and not realising I'm getting older by the year.
Two little trout on klink and dink - one out of the first pool up and the other out of a run further up.
I shall just have to retire onto the easier main river beats in future and start referring to myself as an old fart!
