I decided to give this beat another try with my spare rod. An overcast and breezy afternoon with quite a lot of small black flies about but nothing rising for them. 10 mostly small trout caught by short line nymphing with beaded Pheasant Tail/GRHE nymphs.

Fly fished the Rectory beat today for the first time. A bit too much bright sunshine! Did not see a single fish movement on the water all day!

Brecon Gauge up 3inches with overnight rain and little colour. Sporadic surface activity through the day with fish taken slowly. Few on surface Adams and Brown Klink but mainly on darker nymphs. 11 trout - 8 x 9-11inches and 3 x 13-15inches with the best at 1lb 13oz. Super fish and all in all a very satisfactory and enjoyable day.

Plenty of water in the river and good weather. 7 trout, best about half a pound on a small nymph.

I walked downstream a couple of fields on the right hand bank to where a brook enters the river. Access is discouraged almost everywhere by the fence topped with barbed wire. I could only get in using a tree which had fallen across it. Most fish were caught on nymphs and one on dry fly. I kept hoping for a bigger fish, sadly on this occasion they were only 4 - 7 inches.

Some fish showing at the Marl Bed, possibly resident as one looked quite coloured. No pulls though. We tried various flies. A lovely piece of water though the wind made casting difficult today. Access to some of the pools farther upriver could be improved as the high, overgrown banks are inaccessible in places.

2 decent WBT at 1/2lb plus 5 very small caught on Damsel nymph and Diawl nymph. A nice stretch of river in good condition. Very wet from rain but my son catching his 1st WBT made it all worthwhile.

River was at normal level and running clear.
We fished this beat from around 8:30am to 11:30am on the last morning of a 3 day trip fishing Wye and Usk Foundation beats.
Sadly we were unable to tempt fish with any method we tried, dries, wets or nymphs. We saw no signs of fish and decided to knock it on the head and start the drive home a little earlier than originally planned.
The section below the parking layby is quite easy to fish and wade however the lower and upper sections are somewhat more demanding and probably require a little more fishing skill and confidence in your wading. No fish seen and none caught.
