Beat:Whitney Court

Fishing:Salmon

1 foot 10" falling, a bit of colour.
Having fished at Whitney since 1964, I just tried the most likely places. Very overgrown but still able to get the fly where it mattered.
Salmon caught at Old Court on 2.5 " Willy Gunn, a hen 6lbs.
Next fish moved under the Oak Tree, followed a stripped fly but didn't take. Left it for about half an hour then put over small Silver Stoats Tail, 3rd cast, another hen fish, 5lbs. Both released in the water without touching except with long nose pliers.
A super day, thank you WUF.

Another 3 salmon for the Nyth today and 2 lost. A useful PR statement for the Wye??
" An angler fishing the Nyth and Tyr Celyn caught 11 salmon in a three day session and lost 6 more. All fish were safely released."

The river was running quite clear but there was a reasonable flow with the Brecon gauge at approx 1ft. Hooked and played out a good 12-13lb frsh silver fish (Orange Flamethrower tube) only for it to flip and free itself just as I went to land it! A good day nonetheless.

Beat:Craig Llyn

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:2

Wonderful beat at Craig Llyn. As pretty as it gets. To stand in the middle of the Wye on this beat in decent weather is just bliss. Lots of interesting water over gravel beds but some tricky wading over very large boulders. Around a dozen good size grayling on various dry flies. Great day, nice welcome from the owner much appreciated, thanks WUF.

One hen fish of about 11lb caught on Lower Flats. The fish took a Cascade fished on a sink tip double hander. It gave a very good account ouf itself & was only slightly coloured. It was safely returned. The river was about the perfect height & quite clear. I missed one other solid take on the Upper Flats whilst messing about with the drag on my reel. A superb way to end the season.

A good day all round but started very slow. No interest in the heavy bugs but later in the day we changed to dry flies and brought fish to the surface all over the fishery. Approx 20+ Grayling and a few WBT to the net with many more missed. The biggest fish being around 18in. Thank you again for a great day.

Beat:Upper Wye at Pwll y Faedda

Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:1

2 x coloured hen fish, 30 inches and 31 inches, from the House and Boat Pools, on Bann Shrimp and Willie Gunn tube fished off a fast sink tip. One fish lost after a few seconds play in the Boat Pool. Water gradually clearing and coming down very nicely and quite a number of fish, all of them coloured, were showing regularly. It's certainly a well populated river this autumn.
Brian Skinner, fishing this beat on the previous day (9th), took a pair at 10 and 14 pounds, plus he lost an unusually large fish when the hook pulled at the net after 30 minutes of very dogged play and a series of long runs. He reckons this one might have been a 30. All I saw were the points of the Waddington he hooked it on, which were distorted into some amazing shapes.
