Fishing:Trout (River)

One very nice trout caught right at the bottom of this very beautiful and very interesting beat. Surprisingly few rising fish on the flats (or elsewhere) possibly in part related to three youths swimming and one throwing stones into the river throughout the afternoon.

Area:Usk
Beat:Dinas
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Fish rising in the morning to olives but activity declined during the main part of the day. Fish became much more active in the evening when the two best fish of 2 lb and 2.5 lb were taken. Flies were an emerger olive and a Dogsbody variant. Bright and sunny during the main part of the day. Olives and Mayflies main hatches. A challenging but ultimately very rewarding day on a beautiful stretch of river.

Area:Reservoirs
Beat:Talybont Reservoir
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
3 x trout 10-13 inches, Kate Maclaren and Mallard and Claret. I love to fish a summer evening at Talybont, but won't deny it can be difficult. This year the reservoir is completely full, which restricts the bank access somewhat. Still, I started off well with three modest fish, but then went on to lose a whole load more, most of which hit the Kate on the dropper. One fish which jumped itself off at range looked like a good 2 pounder. About an hour before dusk a really cold wind got up, the air became cooler than the water and my part of the lake seemed to die.

Just an hours late afternoon jaunt. Lots of mayfly duns and spinners. Mayfly buzz on point doing the trick.
Fish between 8 & 14" in fine fettle. Rose many, caught 4. The 14" fish moved a long way cross-downstream from its lair to smash the dry and bolt back. Maybe 2 meters or so! clearly enjoying the feast.

Area:Lower Wye
Beat:Courtfield
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:2
No Salmon caught. 6 x large Shad hooked on spinner.
Found it difficult to get a fly in the water due to the constant flow of canoeists passing by. Then to make things worse, one capsized right in front me and waded right back up the fly run at wyebank thinking the whole thing was a laugh.
I said something to him that made him get out my swim promptly.(I spoke to the Beat Owner Don at the river and he asked me to report this to the Wye and Usk Foundation and the EA). Our day was pretty well spoiled after a 200 mile round trip. I will only fish the Usk in the future.
WUF Note: Wye fisheries from Hay downstream to Monmouth can be subject to heavy canoe traffic at this time of year, especially at weekends. Our advice is to fish early and late in the day or if this isn't practical, book a beat that is outside a right of navigation.

Beat:Chainbridge
Fishing:Trout (River)

Another masterclass from J, where he varied tactics from nymphs and wet flies to Klinkhammers and netted 8 to 1.6lb, nothing under 6oz while I persevered unsuccessfully on dry wulff and yellow dun with 2 fish lost on quite a sparse rise throughout evening.
Water .53m and clear so too low and slow for Salmon. One fish of around 10lb which looked fresh showed twice in the deep water at the Chine between 9 and 9.30pm.
