Seven seems to be the magic number this week, a catch of 7 fish at Penpont, mostly in the 12 inch range but one fish that was just over 18 inches. Plenty of LDOs around lunch time but no grannom.

Snapped twice on a pheasant tail nymph and a missed take on a hare's ear. (Amateur!) Intermediate line. Lots of hatching going on but very few rises. I'll be back.

Bright, sunny but cold on arriving-warming up to 16C during the afternoon. We caught two lovely fish of 2lbs and 3lbs in the morning from the fast riffles at the bottom of the beat. After lunch we caught 3 fish of about 1lb each and two small fish on the stretch between the car park and the bridge - nothing above the bridge.
We fished a double nymph set-up with a weighted ptn on the tail and a small hares ear on the dropper. Nearly all fish took the dropper fly. A variety of flies were hatching throughout the day, but the trout were not interested. A really lovely day on this glorious beat.

Lovely early season day on The Lugg at Eyton. Not fished here before so unsure what to expect. The river from the footbridge upwards is a lovely piece of water, varied, with lots of fishy looking haunts. Started off fishing the duo and rising fish to a dry sedge. As the sun came out so did waves of grannom. At first the only fish showing were young unmentionables. I thought I might be plagued by them until fishing up passed the bridge when trout started taking. A few bends up and I connected with a very big lady, easily over 2lb, who ran all over the place and was shadowed by its equally sized partner. Showing no sign of tiring, she eventually ran upstream and lost me in some tree roots. Being out of season, I'll consider it a long distance release. Fished on until late afternoon. The top stretch above the weir in woodland is well worth fishing. Some deep pools and a few good size trout. Tally for the day was five trout and lots of unmentionables, two of whom I've noted for a return visit.

4 x trout, one at 13 inches and three at 15 inches, on spiders and Stuart Jarvis's dry Bastard Adams pattern. After all the heat and cold of the last week, the temperature this day began at a modest 8 degrees and struggled up to a mild 11 degrees by mid-afternoon. Total cloud cover and a soft light. If only it had rained, it would have been just perfect; the kind of weather we ought to be getting at the end of March. I was unsure what fly to expect after the unseasonably early hatches of the last days; it turned out to be large dark olives, although a few grannom were in the air from the day before. All over by 2 PM.

Rather cold but pleasant day. 5 small WBT caught. Lots of action and quite a few more hooked but not landed, including some large fish: pity!

Lots of fish to be seen but frankly I found all but about 20 yards of this beat unfishable. The stream is flanked on both sides by trees and being so narrow this prevented any sort of cast apart from the odd 'bow and arrow'. After struggling with a dry fly (nothing rising) tried swinging a weighted nymph pendulum fashion. All to no avail. I assume the heron I saw did better than me.
