Booked an evening ticket as I wanted to practice my casting. As expected the river was very low but I did see some fish moving.
I worked my way down slowly and upon reaching the oak tree crib pool I hooked into what I thought was the bottom of the river, turned out to be a 5lb carp! I then had a follow in the same pool just off the crib.

First time on this stream parked bottom end by the ford, slightly overgrown but very fishable. Access although electric wire around edge not a problem manage to winkle one small 6" trout up to the surface with a Greenwells glory didn't see many but I'm sure with more ability more would have been caught . Will be back, maybe next week.

Beat:Upper Wye between Llanwrthwl and Doldowlod, and GPAIC

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

The Upper Wye is cooling down: now 13 degrees around Llanwrthwl / Doldowlod thanks to the Elan outflow, 16 degrees at Builth and 17 degrees on the WUF live webcam page at Llanstephan, so water now much more fish-friendly for all of WUF's Upper Wye beats and GPAIAC waters at Builth. As has been the case for over a month, very little fly at present. Rarely have I seen the upper river so insect-poor, even at this typically sparser time of year. Deliberatly picked a relatively calm day but only a few sedges, one or two pale wateries and some midge appeared, but not in numbers to elicit any sustained rise even into dusk. Understandably very few rising fish, though some oncers kindly revealed their locations. However, trout and the ladies are looking up and down and, fishing the water mainly in necks, tails, creases and foam lanes, fish were taken on jigs, Red Tag spider and surface patterns like pale HF and pale watery emergers, Goran's Sedge and grizzle EH Caddis…mainly but not exclusively, non-rising trout and grayling to 15” / 1.5lb. Praying that a more typical entomological menu will be on offer as autumn approaches, or will it just be flying pigs?

No fish this time but what an amazing place to spend a summer evening.
Beat was easy to access and offered mixed waters to keep the fishing interesting.
I will definitely recommend and be back.
