This upper Wye beat is a short (300 yard) stretch of single bank coarse fishing, a few miles upstream of Hay-on-Wye located next to the quiet village of Boughrood. Although the middle and lower Wye is more famous for barbel, their numbers in the upper river have increased markedly in the last 10 years. This section now has a good number of resident fish, as well as plenty of chub, dace and grayling. Anglers from the club that fish the beat in the winter have reported barbel up to 14lbs in the past two years.
The fishing is a short walk (100 yards) from the tackle drop off point (parking is along the road in the village only) and the banks are well maintained providing anglers with good access to the water. The river here flows mostly over gravel and is steady paced in normal flows, giving opportunities to use all the standard coarse fishing techniques, including trotting.
