Approximately 1.5 miles of mostly double bank trout and grayling fishing on the river Lugg, a few miles upstream of Leominster. The river is becoming renowned as a winter grayling fishing destination, presenting an easier option than the main river Wye and with specimen fish frequently appearing in catch returns. Set in beautiful Herefordshire countryside, the Eyton Beat is a fantastic venue for a day’s fishing throughout the year.

The beat is set amongst pasture land and much of the river has been fenced off recently for habitat improvement and to prevent cattle from entering the river and so that they can’t affect anglers’ enjoyment of the fishery. This makes fishing from the bank a little more difficult in the deeper areas where wading isn’t possible. Otherwise, wading, when permitted, is relatively easy over the gravel and silt riverbed. Please be aware that access in and out of the river can be difficult in the wooded areas (shown in green on the beat map), caution should be taken when wading here.

2023 : There is a bridge on the fishery which is currently closed. This will restrict access to the right bank when the river level is high.

Parking is around 450m from the river.

Please note that no wading is permitted on this fishery from 1st November to 2nd March. This means the only viable grayling fishing method during this period is float fishing/trotting with maggots or other baits from the bank. This is a conservation measure to protect spawning salmon, increasing numbers of which have found in this section of river in recent years. Wading through a newly cut redd, which can be difficult to spot, can have serious consequences for egg mortality.

Online block booking is available on this beat.

Half price evening tickets, fishing from 5pm can be purchased after 1pm on the day of fishing. Available between April and Sept.

Canoeing
Anglers should be aware that there is a right of navigation on the Lugg but that the river is rarely used. Canoeists are not permitted to cross or access the river from private land unless they have permission from the landowner.
