Didn’t fish today, desperate times. We have a week every September on the Wye and we love every second of it catch or not but none of us could face going back to the river in its current state today

Started around 14:30, thankfully the extraction pump wasn’t in use. Although it was raining the river was low and slow so we kept to the deeper water just upstream from the parking area.

Safety note; the growth next to the concrete walkway was so overgrown that only half the width of the path was useable. This meant walking was dangerously close to the 6ft drop into the river.

Other than that, a great afternoon.

Fished at foy bridge for the first time today. Whilst the weather wasn’t great me and my father managed to have a good bit of sport resulting in 27 fish between us with barbel up to 7lb and a nice 5lb chub my dad had later on in the day. Also he managed to catch 2 eels

An absolutely wonderful beat on the moor. The river was quite low on this upper beat, and the only trout were holding in deep plunge pools of at least six feet in depth. Until the river rises, don't bother with other features. Beautiful small brownies with aggressive, slashing takes on sedge dries. Possibly the prettiest place I've ever fished.

Ok so today was a good example of how the fishing experience could be improved. I think more up to date detailed info on the beat is a good starter and for different water levels. So the water was really low which really ruled out most of the top half of the beat which can only really be accessed from going over the bridge and round the house. The lower half looked great and is a big long channel. I clink and dinked it and rose one big trout but that was it. I found one bit of fast deeper water and lost a trout with the euro rod.

I clink and dinked much of the upper section with no interest. Returning to the euro set up I found two bubble lines on the other side to the house with some deeper water and managed one fantastic grayling and a lovely brown. I lost two more. Wading is definitely tricky even with the water low and I used my wading staff as the persistent rain meant I couldn’t see the big rocks. The wading on the lower beat is also tricky - ridged undulating very slippery bedrock. Also the lower beat suits left handers better from a casting perspective.

Unfortunately with the low river levels finding accessible swims in large parts of the beat was difficult and with the persistent rain during the day the few access points became rather treacherous. I opted to don the waders and get with my quarry. I spent a few hours trotting meat and corn around the crib to no avail before moving to the faster water downstream of the suspension bridge. Feeding hemp and trotting corn soon resulted in some chub. After pre-baiting a fast run opposite the croy from the beach with hemp I switched to feeder and pellet in the afternoon. First cast resulted in a nice barbel and this was followed by 6 more to about 8lb and half a dozen chub. Bites were on a regular basis throughout the afternoon. Difficult conditions, rather wet but always a joy to be fishing the Wye.

Second day on beat, fished in the woods again and into the fast water and peg running out of the the fast water. Different day today regards weather torrential rain most of the day but did not stop the fishing. Chub bites straight away on pellet and meat, landed my first Wye barbel on the bomb and my second a little later on the drop again on meat. 15 chub myself on feeder or bomb meat, pellet and Bollie. My Dad continued on pellet feeder and pellet band 4 barbel and lost five in the rocks biggest 8.5lb with 10 chub different sizes. Amazing two day fishing ending a great week on the Wye, very special place and great to be back!
