Another fruitless morning on the Arrow. The river was slightly high and cloudy following rain the previous day but nonetheless in good condition. Access is somewhat challenging with the last mile or so on narrow single track roads with few passing places. Once again the profusion of overhanging trees and bankside vegetation make casting challenging even for someone with over fifty years' experience. Tried both nymphs and dries with no success.

First time I’ve fished this beat so I worked my way down the R/H bank from upper to lower limits. I didn’t see any salmon, although I had one strong pull in Aubreys which stripped line quickly off my reel so that might have been one. It was challenging wading at times, and the trees made for a difficult Spey cast off my right shoulder. I shared the beat with five coarse anglers from the Birch Grove club so had to pick my way around them. I suspect some were in the salmon pools but this was the first time they’ve been allowed to fish this year so I wasn’t going to begrudge them. I’ll probably avoid a Sunday next time though, and will bring the spinning rod rather than the 14’ double hander.

I did not fish at all, having walked this section after a morning on the Home Farm section I decided that few swims that were accessible were to dangerous to fish. Having to scramble down ten feet of bank to then have a few square feet of outcrop to stand on and land fish is not my idea of a days enjoyable fishing. I would recommend that any booking this section take a knotted rope so that they can secure to a tree or something at the top, they would then have something to help get back up. The fishery management team need to make swims more accessible and safer.
Fishing Passport Note: the banks of both the Wye and Usk are protected as a Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). There are, therefore, strict limits as to what can be done with regards bank clearance, which has to be done sensitively and in compliance with the law. Inevitably there will be many inaccessible sections, especially in the peak bank growth months of July and August. We ask all anglers to please bear this in mind when booking Fishing Passport beats and not to assume fishery managers are not doing their job if some areas are overgrown.

Can’t recall ever wearing a fleece to keep warm on 20th June before! Very overcast with a cold wind but no rain so that was a bonus! No barbel but some superb chub, one over 5lbs and several 4 pounders. Also a couple of chunky dace on 6mm pellets. Great day and will be back, of course.
