16 Trout to 1lb all returned; caught on Nymphs. The River had a small amount of colour in it when we arrived and slowly coloured up more during the day, it was overcast and rained constantly. Most fish were taken from under the roots of trees and at the heads of pools and we had less takes as the water coloured, we finished at 3pm Mallhollam Bridge.

Finished at 3pm on the Kington Beat so decided to explore this beat and access as I am new to the wild streams permit. Managed to find it without a problem and wondered down the lane in the pouring rain to this lovely secluded section of the river. Much wider here than at Kington and the flow is much more stout requiring a slightly heavier nymph to get down. By now the river was very coloured and I opted to a flashy orange nymph on point and a black/red/silver afair on the dropper. Worked my way up from the entry point at the bridge and had some intrest in the first pool; as I lifted out the flies there was a swirl at the point fly. Worked my way up the second pool and hit into a bigger fish which after short struggle parted ways. My luck from the morning was now eluding me and I seemed to be spending more time untangling my setup rather than fishing! Managed to get my rhythm back and finished with 4 fish to 12oz and had interest from as many again plus 2 lost fish. Considering the conditions, not bad for 90 minutes of fishing. Only covered half the length but really like this part of the River and will be back.

Very heavy rain finally relented a bit in the late afternoon, by which time river was high, coloured, but just about fishable. During a couple of hours on the water only one rising fish spotted, alongside a bed of ranunculus out of the main flow. Taken on an Adams. Nice to be about in my Barbour jacket in flaming June.

First time on this beat and we loved it, but we searched day for the barbel in the pouring rain and did not find them until dusk. Just managed to catch one before we had to go home. We will be back though. Thank you for a lovely day.

Myself and my Father had a fantastic days fishing with outstanding guidance from Oliver Burch. Although very wet for almost the entire day the fish were taking and the river didn’t rise much but did become increasingly coloured. Success on the lower half of the beat was using the nymph with Grayling being most active in the morning.
In the afternoon we moved to the parachute fly coaxing a number of trout to take.
Our largest trout was around 12 inches and grayling around 14 inches.

On the fish right from the off, a barbel straight away. line bites and signs of fish in the swim the entire day, but would not take a bait after 6am. Didn’t even switch on in the evening. I stayed in one spot most of the day as I knew the fish were there, JJ was in and out of swims like a fiddlers elbow and and managed 1 barbel. Fish just weren’t interested.
