very cold in the water today, wished I had put another layer on ! fished the run in the middle of the beat and could only find the odd fish here and there. went up to the top end and had a bit of difficulty getting out due to water level. but in one spot I did find a shoal and quickly had a few more, and also lost three grayling. went back to the earlier spots... still nothing much happening. in the end I had grayling to 14" and oos trout to 10". its been hard work catching fish this week, and looking at other anglers reports I was not alone ! still it was great fun trying, I really love it over here in wales, and many thanks to WUF for letting me do this.

With access proving difficult by the orchard and so ruling out the upstream section we settled for the middle field. The river was reasonably low and clear and the bright sunny day didn't bode well and so it proved. We started in two swims in the upper section of the field but without a bite moved down and found two more swims within the trees. With the light fading one barbel around 7lb or so obliged to a double 8mm halibut pellet and that was the only bite of the day.

My son Christopher has wanted to catch his first Grayling for a long time. So we asked the foundation for advice ! They recommended the Upper wye at Abernant, great choice we trotted single and double maggots with a stick float and caught steadily all morning, in total we had 9 Grayling up to a pound and a quarter and 5 beautiful wild brown trout up to 12 oz .as soon as the sun came out about 12 ish ,the bites stopped,so we packed up about 1 .30 an absolutely great day ! Thanks guys for the advice,

The Colonel’s Water!
We knew it would be a difficult day. The sudden overnight temperature drop and cold easterly wind were well forecast. And that’s exactly what we got on arrival. So we can’t really complain at the complete lack of fly life and fish. So in other words we didn’t catch anything.
But we met a man who might well have. He was fishing with a telescopic rod, fixed spool reel and something on the end that looked like a multi hooked Devon minnow. We told him he ought not to be using that method since the fishery was fly only and £20.00 per day for the privilege. He told us he fished the stretch often, caught lots of fish using worm too and paid nothing. We thought he might not be The Colonel.
This was our third visit, we’ll not be rushing back.

Booking Office Note:
Anyone coming across illegal fishing (in this case the use of spinner/lure could only have meant the poacher was targeting out of season salmon and trout) should call NRW immediately on 0300 065 3000.

If possible, the owner should be informed too (a telephone number is sometimes included in the booking details) as they may be able to act themselves. As well as breaking byelaws, fishing without the owner's permission is a criminal offence (theft of fishing rights) and can be called into the police on their 101 number too.

conditions looking really nice today, water down to good level and clear. had a few grayling to 14" in the morning and then just before midday there was a small hatch of olives and I saw 1 fish rise ( I`ve been out fishing for the last 6 days and its the first one I`ve seen ! ) quick change of tactics and after the third rise she was in the net. well after that I couldn't buy another fish anywhere.
