D Fs first ever fishing trip started slow with the fish not showing any interest in any of the normal swims. I started to fear that D F s first ever trip was going to end with a blank, however around four, the fish turned on for a brief feed and D managed to catch his first ever barbel and chub. The best barbel was around 8 lb so a good fish for first outing. Wild life was great and the day very enjoyable, regardless of the less than perfect fishing conditions. I'm back next week to have a go myself rather than play gillie for the day. Crossed fingers.

FISHING: A very hot bright day, 4 chub before midday then remainder of fish after 18:30hrs. All fish to meat or pellet, 3 of the Chub were Chublets, best Chub 5lb. best
Barbel 7lb 2oz. all fish in fine fettle, a joy to catch.
CANOES: There appears to be only two types of canoeist, polite and respectful of the river and fellow users or complete morons. We experienced a large group of "Visitors", who despite having the whole river to choose from decided to practice their capsizing drills IN our swim and took exception when challenged, unbelievable!!! Later in the early evening a couple of canoes lashed together being propelled by a very noisey motor belching out fumes and one of the occupants using the plastic personal effects containers as drums. Couldn't the hire companies be asked to issue some kind of instruction or behaviour code? Also, having travelled a considerable distance and paid handsomely for the privilege to fish here it was some what disappointing to witness a young man roll up early evening with a tub of maggots and proceed to fish the top field.
I just hope this doesn't come across as a rant from a privileged elite, it's just that this seems to be the complete opposite to what the Foundation stands for and is trying to achieve and we do feel truly privileged to be able to fish this beautiful river and hope we have the opportunity to do so for many years to come. It's just that this type of behaviour will put that opportunity in jeopardy. Many thanks WUF.
WUF Note : Permitted dates for the use of maggots on the Wye is 15th Sept to 14 March. Please report any illegal activity to the EA Hotline 0800 80 70 60 as instructed in the 'What to do if...' guide sent with your Booking Confirmation email

This was our first visit to this beat and it truly is in the middle of nowhere - the caravans at the bottom of the stretch do spoil the view somewhat but there was no real noise or disturbance from them.
We arrived at 4pm and started off rolling some meat in the first field as it looked too good to pass up. The fish were not very obliging however and a solitary eel was all that we could manage. We then moved down to the island to a deep run that looked perfect. We had a chub first cast but after 2 hours we hadn't had any more knocks. We moved back upstream and settled into a swim and managed a few chub in quick succession then I hooked a barbel which threw the hook in on of the many trees littering the nearside bank. Fortunately we managed to get the barbel going and ended the evening with 9 fish up to 8lb. This was a huge framed fish but was completely empty and in the autumn would comfortably be over 9lb.
A lovely beat that I will looked forward to returning to in September and there are a couple of other areas I would like to explore.

River looked perfect and we were expecting a good day but for some reason the river had switched off and 9 hours fishing brought us just 3 bites and 3 small barbel. The chub had completely disappeared.

Stuning beat with good access and parking. Fished the middle section just off the tree line, it was a baking hot sunny day so not ideal conditions but after a while bites became frequent.
Barbel were hard to find however we had lots of chub bites on pellet, changed to luncheon meat later in the day, bited became less frequesnt but that when the barbel arrived.
A thoroughly enjoyable day with lots of swims to choose from, we will definately return to this section.

Great time had by all. Lovely spot to fish and between us we had 15 chub from 2lb-5lb but only one Barbel this trip at 6 1/2 lb. Fished mainly beat 4 and 5. Great advice from Terry as always making us feel welcome and giving us up to date local knowledge.
Look forward to our next visit. Thanks again.

A warm but overcast day with the river at normal levels. Trotted bread and meat took most of the chub. Switched to legdered pellet for the barbel and a couple more chub. A very enjoyable day.
