15 x trout 10-15 inches, Deer Hair Emerger, Dark Moorgame, Waterhen Bloa, Tungsten Hare's Ear. A session from 10 o'clock to around 4 o'clock on just the one pool of the middle Usk. I was determined in my mind to wait here for a hatch - grannom, dark olives, March brown, all or any would have been acceptable. However, the day was spoiled by an increasing cold upstream wind which eventually became a gale with waves marching up against the current, and a lack of sunlight as time went on. To keep myself amused while waiting for some kind of action on the surface I went through the pool several times with a team of spiders with a nymph on the point and eventually built up to 8 trout. It was a long wait though until nearly 2 o'clock when a few March browns began to float down and trout began to show. I switched to the dry fly rod with a Deer Hair Emerger and eventually got 7 more, although often I couldn't see the fly amongst the waves. It really seemed very cold indeed. Everything quiet again by 4 o'clock.

First day fly fishing: great tuition with Shaun Watkins. Dull and windy conditions had a grayling and a brown trout both around the 1lbs. Lost a fish and missed takes, hatch of May browns around lunch time fish didn't come on just a small number was surfacing. Great surrounding and well maintained banks

Started at 12.30 below the bridge. The trout were riseing to dark olives and my companion,John targeted them whilst I went for salmon. A good silver fish showed about 100yds below the pub but didn't respond. The trout were more cooperative, John hooked/rose 6 but only landed 1. At 3pm we went above the bridge. John fished Woodstream and landed another 4 trout. I Stuck with the double hander without result. It was great to go to the river and see signs of life. We left at 4.30

Really fancied my chances, river perfect and overcast and with all the rain we have had, thought there must be a chance. The wind became a pain by lunchtime and give up about 3.
Is it just me or are the Abernant Sheep really aggressive! Ewes with their lambs being very protective and kept chasing me, had to make a dash for the gate, I think I preferred the Huge Bulls which were there last year!

Gusty wind in the face put the fly rod back in the van by 10am; great shame as the water was just do-able at 0.92mtr at Ross gauge.
Spinning produced a very fat o.o.s. Pike of 15lb+ and then a huge run for a full 6 seconds and a big silver swirl 80 yds downstream. Three minutes later, and back to where it was hooked (top of beat), it just turned again and slipped the barbless hook on the Red and Gold FC. Upside, it was far from tired. Down-side, it would have been nice to catch a glimpse of the wee beastie. But it was a fish!
Next time.....
