A bit of a struggle for myself today, couldn't settle in the right swim, managed 1 barbel and 3 chub. Honours undoubtably go to Mr J Dixon of Farnham who managed 13 barbel to 8lbs, top fishing, sweetcorn the going bait.

Eventful opening day foray on the new Goodrich court beat. 3 well mended kelts brought to hand (Corner Tree, Gabions, Dog Hole) and a heavy fish lost in the Dog Hole after a couple of mins play...never saw it, but it was very powerful and would have been the mother of all kelts! Every chance it was a bottle of Pol Roger that slipped the hook. Doh! Missed a couple of other pulls. A fast sink tip and 1" willie gunn tube did the damage.

Fished right down the bottom in the fast shallow water for an early barbel on the feeder. Used a new 4.2m heavy feeder rod (200g) from Italian company Alcedo. Allowed you to fish above the flow and it worked. The fish took 15 minutes to sudue in the very fast flow but must have been 9lb of anyones money. Huge shoulders. Do they fight more in the cold water? My arms still aching. Lost another and caught a nice chub as well. Great day.

2 rods toiled in the wind and rain but we were defeated, so sad to report a double blank. Very occasional rises to an intermittent olive hatch, but only when the wind dies down and the sun came out. The afternoon was plagued by a couple of groups of canoeists.
WUF Note: No canoeing is permitted on the upper Usk between March 3rd and October 17th (inc) unless the height is above the red line on the Brecon gauge. If anyone encounters canoeing outside the agreed dates & water heights please inform them of their breach and let us know. If idenfication is possible, please let us know which organisation they were from.

A new season. The Lugg was in excellent condition, the fish were elusive and the anglers rusty. One Brown Trout and two mini Grayling. Better days ahead...

A blank on opening day. A very pretty little stream. The howling cross winds were not the most ideal conditions for casting a 2wt however. A few fish seen in the remarkably pellucid water, but they seemed to still be gripped by the wintry conditions and there was no sign of rising fish despite a very brief and small hatch of LDO around midday.

Disappointing day. Heavy overnight turned the river gravy brown so no fish caught. Beautiful stretch of river though.

Great to knock the dust off the trout rod. A very social day at the kind invitation of owner Barry. Weather sunny with occ. squally showers. Quite bracing when up to nether regions in water. One kelt caught by another rod. River in hibernation mode. A few large dark olives hatching. No rises or tugs. A beautiful double rainbow [not the finned type!] at end of day. Appetite for the season well and truly whetted.
