Due to my intended fishing companion's inability to walk having ricked his back I arrived alone having missed most of the day. I commenced fishing mid afternoon and almost immediately hooked a half-pounder on a GRHE (floating line) from the 'road side' bank. A second soon followed and the fight by both belied their size. Both were returned to the water for a chat together. Then the weather changed; Midsummer's Day and it poured down either quieting the fish (and the midges) or dulling my touch or both (I hunt too and wearing headgear really kills my senses so I continued with wet head).
Summary: Wild and beautiful. Consider hiring the boat via Tyn-Y-Cornel at Talyllyn as the lake is large enough to enjoy fishing on the drift (WUF take note). Bank-side casting was easy with no snagging at all on the back-cast and there was some fly-life that without the rain should have converted me to fish dry but the lake's depth should support a (slow?)sinking line. The track needs just a couple of day's work to make passable to it's end in a car. Fortunately, my 4WD handled it and, unless you are a walker or super-fit, DO NOT CONSIDER WALKING FROM THE METALLED ROAD as advised somewhere as it's much too far (at least an hour I'd guess one-way) and the return walk carrying the essential waders could kill you after negotiating the tufted mogul-fields surrounding the lake. Drive as far as you dare by car, perhaps to the derelict building very near to the fishing, but do go if only for the peaceful solitude. I shall return, no doubt, but using my 19-year-old son as the oarsman.

I had booked to fish Fenni Fach but as Wednesday was a wash off I took up my second Glanusk booking instead. Water still rather cloudy and I managed only two small trout, one on an Adams, the other on orange nymph. Saw very few larger fish rising. As the rain returned yet again I packed up at 5.30 p.m. However, it is always a pleasure to spend a day at this beautiful estate.

Four anglers caught 10 barbel, best 9lb 7oz. The middle section produced well. We all enjoyed the day which was the
first visit to this stretch. You need to decide which section to fish as access to the various parts are distinct. Day spoilt by dreadful prolonged and heavy rain later in the day. All anglers caught barbel so good sign.

Fished with my colleague JJ who caught a very respectable 11" brown trout. Enjoyable day with some light rain during the afternoon. Hatches of pale wateries and some mayfly. Landed two small wild trout (up to 6")caught on a parachute Greenwells. Missed several others on a spent mayfly pattern and Tups Indispensible. Good sitings of Banded Demoiselles, Blue-Tailed Damselfly and Ringlet and Large Skipper butterflies.

A fantastic days fishing was had by both of us, Thanks to the earlier input from Colin the Ghillie we homed in on 2 key locations that kept producing Barbel throughout the day.
The river was about 2 and a half feet over summer level.
We finished the day with 25 Barbel to 2 rods and a few Chub.
The bait was halibut pellet fished with feeders.

Nil fish seen or caught.

A typically superb day on this Monnow trib. 20+ WBT landed to 12.5" and three times as many missed or lost, including a fish of over 2lbs that was clearly visible and had my heart pounding for many minutes afterwards.

Para Adams and small tan klink were what worked - but anything similar would have done!

Water is clear and low but there is plenty of flow and every likely looking place had a fish or 10 in it.

Don't go expecting wide open overhead casting. Go armed with a 7'6" or smaller 3# rod overlined with a 4# line, a steeply tapered leader of 10' or so and an ability to side cast from a kneeling postition for much of the time and you will have more fun than you can imagine with waders on.

Meas y Beran is more open but very similar in nature and also stuffed with fish and the other two upper Honddu beats are looking great as well.

First time at Eyton. From mid-morning onwards, and much like the last two months, it was very windy indeed. Some mayfly emerged in the afternoon, but there was little evidence of any fish clonking the emergers. Fished various bits of water with usually successful mayfly emergers and, much as expected, raised nothing! A couple of yellow mays and the occasional emerging sedge and that was about it. Not surprisingly, given the general lack of fly and unabated wind, there were few rising fish. Two trout of 10-12" and four 8-9" grayling was all I could come up with and all to a small black F fly and hare's ear emerger. No joy on the nymph. Watched a clonking brownie nymphing under the bridge - guesstimated at well over two pounds. Will come back on a better day with a few inches more water to what appears to be a lovely beat.

Water slightly coloured but not overly. Overhead there was a fair amount of cloud cover but alas nil fish were rising. During the day a downstream breeze increased but not enough so as to effect the fishing.

Fished nymph's upstream all morning and managed just one 6 inch fish, returned immediately.

Continued with nymph's until 2pm then switched to K & D. No success with this method either so packed up around 1/2 3 and enjoyed a lovely ice cream from the dairy in Brecon.

A lovely stretch of river! A season rod was just landing a lovely plump 17" wbt in front of us when we arrived - but that was very nearly it!

3 fish rose all day - 2 caught, one long distance catch and release. 2 x 8" wbt final tally. Very cold again - will return to this super beat when weather is more predictable
