Following yesterdays hectic sport at Backney we arrived at Wyastone Leys hoping to find a better stamp of fish. This was our first visit to Wyastone and as it was my turn for first choice of swim I chose the obvious one nearest to boys rocks with FG settling in the next available swim some way downstream. The river was still slightly up with some colour and a nice flow to it. Once I'd found where the worst of the snags were I managed to largely avoid getting snagged and had 10 barbel best 8lb 10oz including another 4 between 7 and 8 lbs and 5 between 7 and 4 1/2 lbs . FG had 3 barbel up to 7lbs and some chub. After fishing a day ticket length on Thursday we returned to fishing the WUF length at Courtfield on Friday with another friend AP who has submitted the report for that session but which included my best 2 barbel of the trip 9lb 7oz and 8lb 13oz and best chub 5lb 1oz. Many thanks to the the WUF staff who were helpful as ever particularly on Friday when we rang them at 9am and they found us somewhere to fish for the same day.

2 barbel and a few chub. Strong windy conditions made fishing a little difficult. Bites were few.

Great day but salmon seemed inexplicably dis-interested in what I was offering. I did eye-ball one on Gravel Catch as it leaped clear.

Beat:R49 River Dore Abbeydore

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Fished late morning until mid-afternoon. Little fly (saw one mayfly spinner!) and very few fish rising. Low water, so fish mainly in the pools, necks and tails. Had six trout to 10" on a hare's ear emerger. This short 800m beat is now looking very neglected compared with 2-3 years ago: two water gates completely broken; angler's access gates which don't lock (tried mending one on the way out) as a result of which cattle have been in the river and sheep still were; fallen trees and an impenetrable 2-3 foot dam halfway up the beat blocked by timber which seems unlikely to be there as a result of any major bankside management in recent years on this beat! Whilst I love the "commando tactics, hands and knees approach" demanded by these streams, flicking flies under branches and into likely spots with the 7' rod, this short beat really needs some attention, and in places a strategic haircut. Without changing its character, nor removing protection for fish, a few hours work from a few willing pairs of hands could transform it to its former glory, and relieve the frustration of simply not being able to carefully access much of this short beat's fish-holding water.

We were initially perplexed as to where to fish but thanks to WUF for advice. 3 of us finished with 26 barbel and some chub on what is a lovely piece of water.

A warm day beside what appeared to be a very low river, with fish concentrated in the deeper and more oxygenated pools. Lots of fly about, with a few mayflies (and later in the day spinners) coming off. Fish sporadically rising, three to 12' caught on grey or black klinks. Apart from making it rain (for a prolonged period) the Foundation couldn't do more to improve what was a lovely day by a wonderful stretch of upland water.

Me and the boy arrived late morning caught 3 chub. Had a good chat with Don the owner - put us some fish, 6 more decent chub and two barbel all on feeder fished pellets.
