Our glorious summer goes on. Come mid-afternoon, it was maybe too hot for fishing but, nay bother as, with an early start, I was ready for home by then. Some nice Grayling - fish of 12" plus - from the bottom of the beat. Ditto from Lady Alexanders Catch. The odd fish upstream before a close encounter with an enormous Barbel up by the Edw. Note to self - a 4 wt rod and a tennis racket sized landing net are not the ideal tools for dealing with a double figure Barbel. Tres bonne

We picked this beat on account of the beautiful scenery but what we hadn't factored in was the proximity to holiday cottages/campers etc which mean't that at least half of the beat was unfishable due to people swimming and picnicking on the river. So, we concentrated our efforts on the top of the beat. The main pool was hard to fish due to the depth and awkward wading but there were lots of fish moving here. Our best sport was had at the very top where the water runs down towards the pool. 4 trout on a small black klinkhammer best of which was around 3/4 lb. What a stunning river the Usk is!

Second visit to this beat , great venue . Unfortunately I didn't leave myself much time to fish here due to a busy day , only squeezed in 4 hours and didn't catch , had a few indications but nothing materialised .
I had to leave just before prime time , But I'm sure I would have caught If i'd stayed ,
I like it here , I will be back again

Area:Monnow

Beat:Monnow Valley

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:2

We visited this stretch of the river. It is completely inaccessible without waders there are four entry points onto the beat from the old mill house back to the road. The stream is very difficult to access without significant mountaineering skills. I took my boys to teach them fly-fishing and it was time wasted. No fish seen let alone caught. Very frustrating. Access not easily found and when you do it is so over shadowed by trees and scrub that you can’t possibly fish.
