8 Trout

good afternoon fishing. Had many more rises than I hooked up with.

3 Trout

One hour in evening. Rose and missed three fish. Tricky with wind and declining temperatures

Fished for 2 hours between 11am and 1pm using dry flies and caught two small brown trout. Lots of mayflies and this pattern took the trout (which were released). Certain to be excellent fishing in the evening but we had other plans unfortunately.

2 Trout

Mayfly out in number this evening took 5-6 trout on dry mayfly then switched to small spinner pattern to take another 18+ trout a couple of grayling and chub. Nothing big but a beautiful evening.

Two of us fished all afternoon and early evening. Had to work hard for the fish as the water was low. The fish were all in lovely condition, and were all caught on dry fly. Our last fish was a beautiful specimen approaching 2lbs, which was my fishing partner's personal best from a small river.

8 Trout

This was the last of a 4 day trip to the Usk and Wye so I knew already how low the river was. So I opted to at least try the pools that MIGHT hold a fish in such low water - the Mill and Rectory neck. Started at 8am but I saw and felt nothing. It was dis-spiriting to be honest. By 10.30 I was off home. I'm rethinking the tactic of booking some days months in advance and hoping the river will be in good sorts. I think, for the salmon, I will hope to be able to take a short-notice day off work when conditions are right and head west for 24 hours. I did see from the bridge at Boughrood some extraordinary creatures below - which I later identified as Sea Lampreys. They were a good three feet long and frankly rather creepy but I gather they have been endangered and are now returning to our rivers which is a good thing, I guess...
