Two small grayling taken on small PTN. The odd rise seen, missed one on a deer hair caddis. Not a great deal of activity. There is a footpath on the north bank that takes you quite far down the beat.

Fished Dolmeudwy and the Orchard late pm at 2ft 10ins approx. Water clearing but lots of leaves and general debris evident. Saw a salmon head and tail mid-stream in lower Dolmeudwy and a one jump lazily at the start of the Orchard. Mid-Orchard a salmon then made a surface lunge quite aggressively for my Ally tube, made serious contact and pulled line but then pinged off. Fished the pool down a second time with a different fly but had no more sightings or contact. By then the light failing and atmosphere becoming cold.

10 x grayling 7-13 inches, 1 x out of season trout 19 inches, Sturdy's Fancy plus a couple of the grayling on Tungsten Hare's Ear. First time on this new beat and I managed to explore most of the double bank section. Much of it is very different from the typical Irfon, even being full of weed, and reminds me of Llandewi on the Ithon. As the start was rather cold I began with heavy nymphs, which weren't very effective and it was well into the afternoon when I began to notice a few rises - I had to slog back to the car and make up the dry fly rod which I had been too lazy to bring with me on the bank. The big trout was a surprise, sipping like a little grayling on a pool tail, took a size 16 Sturdy's Fancy and then was airborne like a rocket quite a few times as it dashed around. Unfortunately it was out of season of course. A disconcerting number of people arrived at the river to peer into pools looking for salmon.

River was 0.7 and dropping, clear and looking lovely. A few salmon were jumping and I had a pull in the morning session but didn't connect. Fished hard throughout the day and was rewarded in the afternoon with a nice 8/9lb hen fish which fell to a copper tube gazcader on my 12'6 Sage Method with AFS scandi line from the upper rocks pool. Definitely worth all the hard work. This is a superb little fishery I will be back. Many thanks!

No fish caught or seen. The river had too much colour for my liking, but the height was ok. It was odd, not to see any travelling fish at the Home Catch, as the fish normally show themselves in this pool. Be that as it may, I enjoyed myself.

Beat:Bideford Brook

Fishing:Trout (River)

3 x trout 6-10 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. Very difficult today as this brook, like the other forest streams, is still very low and clear. even as yet another flood comes down the Wye.
