Fished with HW. Tough going in the morning with only a graylet each to show for our efforts. We found a shoal at around 1pm and each had some brief success on deep bugs fished on a French leader setup

A nice day out with two fishing buddies and my first visit to this beat. It’s a lovely stretch of the Upper Wye with plenty of fishing – be prepared for a walk! Lots of varied water from deep, slow moving pools to fast, skinny water. The water was exceptionally clear, which probably made things harder and as ever some quite challenging wading amongst slippery rock – so felt soles are recommended. Although heavy nymphs were the go-to method, a couple of weighted traditional flame tails seemed to work best, swung lazily downstream (accounting for the better fish, two 17" grayling). Based on the type of water, I look forward to another visit, leaving the 10ft 3wt in the car and wondering with the dry fly rod in search of trout. Well worth a visit with safe parking at the top end within the caravan park complex.

River levels ok and gin clear. 8 to hand was hoping to contact the larger fish, sadly all around the 10-12 inch mark. Nice half day had.

Like yesterday, unfortunately not a bite to be had despite trying different methods/swims. At this time of year, hardly surprising but a lovely day out none the less. Same moan; more rafts of freshly cut branches dumped in the river and
forcing line to be hastily wound in . I would have thought there should be some sort of restriction on dumping this sort of waste in the river ?

Used duo nymphs but nothing caught, or seen. Rod Rings freezing up, temperature -2 and foggy (not quite what was forecast !!!) The water was gin clear and there was very little breeze. We really struggled today, perhaps someone could put some advice on site to help us regarding flies to use in these tough cold conditions, despite all the negatives it was still so much better than working.
Thanks to W&U and the Colonel for making this lovely beat available.

Whilst it was a cold day, thought I might be able to winkle out a chub or two on paste/meat/maggot, fishing in the deeper margins , but to no avail. Not a touch, but a lovely day out. I would like to have a moan; there was obviously some kind of clearance work going on further upstream , fishery work perhaps and annoyingly large rafts of freshly cut branches came down stream all day clearly showing freshly cut saw marks. Surely this sort of waste can be easily put on the bank and burned / disposed of, instead of using this beautiful river as a dustbin ? Perhaps W+UF could use their influence to prevent this kind of behaviour.

5 x grayling 11-17 inches, trotting. Two good ones, but all very nice looking fish. A hard frost and the temperature never rose in this valley, so problems with rod ring icing and the net froze on my back. Water 0.279 on the gauge, running fast and a greenish/grey colour. I'm afraid I cried off early to go and warm up in the car.
