WOW! 4th time fishing and first river fishing. Accompanied by my experienced tutor and cheery companion we walked our kit down a beautifully maintained access to the most beautiful part of the River Wye. A few seconds in and a Kingfisher welcomed our arrival. After being shown the techniques of river fishing I got stuck in, who said fishing was boring! After using a double boilie the rod jerked and I was squealing. My tutor calmed me and slowly and carefully I brought in a beautiful Barbel about 3.5lbs (now named Barney!) so exciting just couldn't believe it. Having read some tips and listening to Dean Macey on TV recently took some Pepperami cut into small chunks, after attaching 2 chunks cast out 3/4 away across river, within 30 seconds another bite... another Barbel. Whilst thinking I couldn't have had a more perfect day it was my tutors' turn to catch a Barbel, then a quiet spell. But... luck was still with me and I caught a Chub. What a day and for a first on the river I want to go again. Just wicked. Thanks Holme Lacey 3 for a memorable day and a great first river experience.

Perfect autumn day for Grayling on the Ithon at Llandewi, using a 15' 5:5 Tenkara rod with french leader, had one decent fish 14" from a middle pool on a peeping caddis, then the same fly was taken by something much bigger & heavier. After about 10 minutes of deep resistance & a few lunging runs around the pool, it broke the surface & I was more than surprised to see it was a salmon! Luckily my tippet held out & combined with the extra flex in the rod I managed to land it after another 10 minutes, I would guess the weight about 5-6lb. Fish was unhooked in the water & safely returned.

A lovely beat, and fished with real pleasure if to little result. Conditions somewhat damp and overcast, and no rises seen. Two fish caught and safely released - a trout and a grayling, both taken in the tail of a pool on a gold beaded PTN.
