Beat:Whitehouse (River Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

River was very low, weather warm. Fishing during daylight was very poor, no sign of activity, and not a bite at all.
Only the deeper water by the trees showed any productivity.

From around 7pm signs of fish activity began, large trout or salmon rising and jumping. Bait fish scattering. In two evening sessions we caught 7 barbel and 1 chub all on glugged halibut pellets (2 rods). Two barbel were in low double figures. One barbel had a growth on its cheek the size of a small tomato. The rest were in very good condition.

The chub was a fair size, over 4lb, but it had been attacked quite recently we assume by a large pike. It had scale and flesh damage about the size of a small hand on one flank.

Although we had booked the beats for three days we decided to return home on the third rather than wait until the evening to fish, due to the 3 hour drive home. The screaming jets, combine harvesters and constant stream of canoeists made the tranquil setting a little less secluded than we anticipated.

Overall a very satisfying trip, great fighting barbel, but a long patient wait required.

Beat:Dinas & Abercynrig on the Usk....

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Zero catch. However there were plenty of rising fish, especially about 75m to the right of the parking area. We just couldn't entice them.

Nevertheless we had a great day out on a lovely stretch of water surprisingly undisturbed by the nearby A40 (except of course near the bridge).

Beat:Lower Clochfaen (R2)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Having passed through Llangurig more times I can remember on the way to fishing the Rheidol in Aberystwyth I thought now was the time to give the upper Wye a try. We decided to fish the upper lower beat! first which was challenging to say the least especially with a hell of an upstream/cross stream/down stream breeze! It was so strong at times you could dap your fly.

Even so I managed a good grayling of about 16ins on a bh ptn and lost another approx the same size. The wife managed to get one fish to rise 3 times to her Adams and managed to miss it every time! (Been there....) She managed to move a few more later but blanked for the day. I managed to hook and loose another 4 fish, all taken on an Adams. The Adams seemed to be the fly today had at least 8-10 offers without hooking any.(I'm blaming the wind!!!) Some seemed like good fish too.

Very difficult day with the wind. Funny, its the first time I've had my fly drag upstream before..... I'll be back on a calmer day.

Beat:Luggsbridge (B35)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

A pretty average day all in all, with a good morning producing 4 chub between 2-3lb, followed by a very quiet afternoon. The bites returned at around 6-7pm, just before I had to leave! All the chub were caught on luncheon meat, but it's just a shame it didn't tempt the barbel. As a first time visitor to the Luggsbridge fishery, I can honestly say it's a gorgeous river, with plenty of well constructed swims, most of which have huge 'big fish' potential.

Many thanks to the WUF for providing and maintaining such a superb stretch of river.
