Fownhope 5 comprises just over ¾ mile of single (left) bank fishing on the middle reaches of the Wye, a few miles downstream of Hereford. It has 4 named salmon pools – The Barr, Lea Brink, Froth Hole and The Lucky Stone, which is one of the noted catches in this part of the Wye. There are other, unnamed pools at the lower end of the beat that are worth exploring too. Given good water conditions the beat is suitable for both fly fishing and spinning (when byelaws allow).

This part of the Wye is highly rated for coarse fishing. All the usual target species are present in good numbers - barbel, chub, pike and dace. The field at the top of the fishery will be the most popular with coarse anglers because of its proximity to the parking area but for the more adventurous, there is over ½ a mile of water to explore further downstream.

Please note that there is a 300 yard walk from the parking area to the riverbank. Also, that there is no entry into the wood from the upstream end due to a landslide. If you want to fish this section or below, you must use the public footpath around the wood, entering it from the downstream end (see beat map for details). Otherwise, once at the water’s edge, access is relatively easy. There are a number of croys from which to fish at the upper end while below the wood, the banks are more open.

Please be aware that the owners reserve the right to fish 2 rods daily although these will seldom be used.
