The Barnard Castle Angling Club beat offers approx. 3 miles of single and double bank fishing in and around the market town of Barnard Castle for brown trout, grayling and salmon. The fishing has plenty of variety, including runs, riffles, deep holding pools, shelves and cascading water. Wading is simple in many areas, but extreme caution must be taken below Abbey Bridge and in the middle of the town. A wading staff is highly advisable.

This beat offers fly water for trout, grayling and salmon during a spate, with a mixture of water types and 6 named salmon pools. Worm fishing is permitted for trout, but NO MAGGOTS are allowed.

The best of the fishing can be found on the upper limit of the water above the town, and also downstream of the town from the Caravan park to Abbey Bridge. Below Abbey Bridge is a gorge, so real caution must be taken while accessing these parts. The water in the middle of the town is incredibly picturesque, but caution must be observed for shelves.

The beat fishes exceptionally well on the fly for trout and grayling with faultless methods being traditional north country spiders, dry flies, and up or down stream nymphing. Streamers are also a noted method. Regarding Salmon, fishing during a spate will increase your chances. Dark red shrimp patterns on low water doubles or copper tubes and coneheads are a favourable option. Fishing with a 9ft or 9ft 6" line rating #4 or #5 is the perfect choice of rod for trout and for salmon, a 10ft 7wt or a 12ft/13ft double handed rod will be ideal.

Access is easy for this beat. Ample parking is available on various locations, please see map for details.

Included in this ticket, the club also offers 480 metres of fishing on the river Greta at Bowes. This piece of water is rarely fished and offers the fly angler the opportunity of a truly wild fishing experience.
