The Raby Estate on the Upper Tees offers approximately 10 miles of outstanding fly only fishing on the North bank of the river Tees and has a good variety of water.

The Upper Tees is world renown for being an area of outstanding natural beauty and is home to the famous falls of Low Force and High Force (Britain’s largest waterfall).

The Lower end of the beat at Dent Bank is an ideal location to catch Salmon from mid-August onwards. It fishes well after rain, immediately when the river levels start to drop off. Fishing for salmon is from Dent Bank and throughout the beat until you hit the impassable High Force waterfall, but please note there is NO fishing at Low force or High Force (See map for details).

Brown trout fishing is exceptional, and especially noted for the 2 sections at Cronkley Bridge and Widdybank. From there you can fish all the way to the upper limit of Cauldron Snout. The fish up there although not big, they scrap, and are noted for their dark appearance due to the tinted Tees water from the Peat. A catch return of 30 fish per day is not uncommon.

Wading can be tricky in places with the lower section more manageable. A wading staff is advised. Higher up the beat from Cronkley Bridge to the upper limit is wadable but is hard work. Many areas however, are fishable from the bank.

All the Raby water fishes exceptionally well, but faultless methods prove to be traditional north country spiders, large bushy dry flies and large Stoneflies. Streamers are also a noted method. Fishing with a 9ft or 9ft6in line rating #4 or #5 is the perfect choice of rod to handle the permanent downstream wind. For salmon, a 10ft 7wt or a 12ft/13ft double handed rod will be ideal.

Fishing during a spate will increase your chances of a salmon, with dark red shrimp patterns on low water doubles or copper tubes being the order of the day.

Access is easy throughout the Raby Estate and it usually requires a small walk. For all parking points please see map for details. The beat map is issued on booking.
